About this layer

Observatories range from major research telescopes on remote mountaintops to small public observatories run by colleges and astronomy clubs. This layer maps 797 astronomical observatories in the US listed on Wikidata, released under CC0. Many offer public viewing nights or visitor centers, which makes them good stops on a stargazing trip.

Pair the layer with International Dark Sky Places to see where good skies and telescopes overlap, as they do in Arizona and parts of the West. Add Meteorite Landings for more space-themed exploring, and switch to 3D terrain to see why so many big telescopes sit on high peaks. Check each observatory's site for visiting hours.
