About this layer
The US has an official name for nearly every town, creek, hill and valley, and some of them are very strange. This layer maps 3,212 odd and funny place names picked from the USGS Geographic Names Information System, the federal government's official database of place names. Because the names come from GNIS, they are real, official names, not jokes.
Use the layer to find a funny name near home, plan a quirky photo stop on a road trip, or start a conversation about local history, since many odd names have origin stories. It is a lighthearted layer that pairs well with Stories Set Here and Ghost Towns for a map of offbeat places.
