Terms of Service
Last updated October 20, 2026
Bottomless Maps (bottomlessmaps.com) is an outdoor map, run by Chuck (“we”, “us”). By using the site you agree to these terms. If you don't agree, please don't use it. Our Privacy Policy explains what we store and why.
Your account
You can use the map without an account. An account keeps your maps, pins, routes, tracks and uploads, and it's needed for the AI planner. Use an email address you control and keep your password to yourself; you're responsible for what happens under your account. One account per person, please. We may suspend or close accounts that abuse the site or other people.
Your content
What you add (pins, drawings, routes, tracks, uploads, notes) stays yours. You let us store it, process it and show it back to you so the site works, and show it to others only if you make your map public. Don't upload anything you don't have the right to share, or anything illegal.
The AI trip planner
Create with AI turns a description of a trip into a suggested plan, built from our map layers and the route tool. It uses Claude, an AI model made by Anthropic, reached through Cloudflare AI Gateway. Before your first plan you accept these terms and the Privacy Policy once.
- Your prompts, trip options and plans are stored with your account to improve the planner and to monitor abuse, and they're sent to Anthropic through Cloudflare to make the plan. See the Privacy Policy.
- Limits: 5 plans per account per day (a day starts at midnight US Eastern; a refine counts as a plan). The planner can also be unavailable for the rest of a day when the site's daily AI budget is used up. We may change these limits.
- Plans are suggestions, not checked by a person. They can be wrong: closed roads and trails, permits and reservations, distances, climbs, water and camp availability. Check them yourself (see “Outdoor safety” below).
- Don't use the planner for anything other than planning trips, try to get around its limits, or send it personal information about other people.
Map data and licenses
The map combines data from many public sources. Each layer's source is credited on the map (the ⓘ button at the bottom right) while the layer is on. In short:
- OpenStreetMap data © OpenStreetMap contributors, under the Open Database License (ODbL). If you reuse it, credit OpenStreetMap, and share databases you derive from it under the same license.
- U.S. government data (National Park Service, Forest Service, BLM, USGS, Recreation.gov and others) is in the public domain.
- Some layers use other open licenses (CC0, CC BY 4.0, ODC-BY and similar), each credited on its layer, and a few use the publisher's own terms.
- Base maps: OpenFreeMap (OpenStreetMap data), OpenTopoMap (CC BY-SA), and Esri World Imagery (Esri, Maxar, Earthstar Geographics), each under its provider's terms. Terrain comes from Mapzen / AWS Terrain Tiles. Routes come from the Valhalla routing engine (FOSSGIS servers) on OpenStreetMap data.
Data can be incomplete, out of date or wrong. Report problems with the Feedback button.
Outdoor safety
Bottomless Maps is a planning aid, not a navigation or safety device. Trails, roads, campsites, closures, permits, distances and elevations on the map or in a plan may be inaccurate or out of date, and conditions change. You're responsible for your own safety: check current conditions and rules with the land manager (for example the park or ranger district), carry a proper map and the right gear, tell someone your plans, and turn back when it's unsafe. Never rely on this site in an emergency; call 911.
No warranty
The site and everything on it, including AI plans, are provided “as is” and “as available”, without warranties of any kind, including accuracy, fitness for a purpose or availability. To the extent the law allows, we aren't liable for any loss, injury or damage that comes from using the site, its data or its plans. Some places don't allow these limits, so they may not all apply to you.
Feedback
When you send feedback, we may use your ideas to improve the site, with no obligation to you.
Ending your use and deleting your data
You can stop using the site at any time. You can download a copy of your data, or delete your account and its data, yourself in Account settings (the menu under your email). If you can't sign in, send a request with the Feedback button and include your account email. We may also end accounts that break these terms.
Changes
We may update these terms. The date at the top shows the latest version. If a change matters for the AI planner, we'll ask you to accept the new version before your next plan.
