Privacy Policy

Last updated October 20, 2026

Bottomless Maps (bottomlessmaps.com) is run by Chuck (“we”, “us”). This page explains what we collect, why, and who else sees it. It goes with our Terms of Service. We don't sell your data and there are no ads.

Your account

To make an account we store your email address and a hashed (scrambled) version of your password. With your account we store what you save: maps, layers, pins, drawings, routes, tracks, uploads, places you've marked visited, and your map settings. Your map is private unless you make it public.

We email you only about your account: password reset links, confirming a new email address, and a notice to your old address when it changes. These emails are sent through Cloudflare's email service. Reset and confirmation links are stored hashed and expire after 1 hour (reset) or 24 hours (new email).

The AI trip planner

When you use Create with AI, we send your prompt, your trip options and the planner's working data (names and locations of map features, route distances and climbs) to Anthropic, which makes the Claude model, through Cloudflare AI Gateway. Cloudflare relays and logs these requests for us, and Anthropic processes them to produce the plan, each under its own terms and privacy policy (Anthropic, Cloudflare).

We store each planner run with your account: the prompt, the trip options (including any start and end you picked), a summary of the plan, whether it worked, and its size and cost. This is kept to improve the planner and to monitor abuse, and to apply the daily limit (5 plans per day). We also record when you accepted these terms. Please don't put other people's personal information in a prompt.

Place names you type as a start or end are looked up with the Photon geocoder (komoot), straight from your browser.

Feedback

If you send feedback, we store your message, your account email if you're signed in (or the name and email you choose to add), the page and map view you were on, your browser type, and a hashed version of your IP address to limit spam. Messages are emailed to our private inbox. We use your email only to reply.

Usage counts

We count which features get used (for example “a layer was turned on”), never where you are or what you look at on the map. Counts aren't tied to your account, and a hashed IP address is kept for a short time only to stop abuse. Do Not Track and Global Privacy Control turn the counts off.

Cookies and browser storage

We use one cookie, tm_session, which keeps you signed in for up to 30 days. It's essential, secure and HttpOnly (page scripts can't read it). There are no advertising or tracking cookies. When you're signed out, your map and settings live in your browser's local storage, on your device only.

Cloudflare Turnstile

The feedback box and the AI planner use Cloudflare Turnstile to check you're a person and not a bot. Turnstile looks at signals from your browser and device, under Cloudflare's Turnstile privacy terms.

Other services your browser talks to

The site is hosted on Cloudflare. Map tiles, terrain and imagery load straight from their providers (OpenFreeMap, OpenTopoMap, Esri, AWS Terrain Tiles), and routes are computed by the Valhalla routing service (FOSSGIS) through our server. These providers see your IP address and the map area you request, like any website you load content from.

How long we keep data, and deleting it

We keep your account data, planner runs and feedback until you delete them, or until we close the site. In Account settings (the menu under your email) you can export a copy of your data as one file, and delete your account and everything with it right away. If you can't sign in, send a request with the Feedback button and include your account email. You can also delete your own pins, layers, maps and uploads at any time in the app.

Children

The site isn't meant for children under 13, and we don't knowingly collect their data.

Changes

If we change this policy, we'll update the date at the top, and for changes that affect the AI planner we'll ask you to accept again before your next plan.
